Update by user Jan 11, 2012
Update: In December I was contacted by the Pep Boys Region Manager who apologized for my less than satisfactory experience. He was very sincere and offered to \"make it right\", which was nice to hear.
I am not looking for compensation, I just want other consumers to be aware of the issue I had.
This mistake (mounting wrong tire size) could happen at any tire dealer. I just found it odd that given the potential liability of literally destroying the running gear of an All Wheel drive car, the local Pep Boys staff would have been more apologetic.

I purchased four tires at Pep Boys in West St Paul, MN for my wifes BMW since Pep Boys was offering buy 3 get fourth one free. When they wrote up the work order, the total should have been about $490 including tax. they added on tire pressure monitor repair, 4 wheel alignment, and Premium installation package for a grand total of $800! I then had to tell them I didnt want any of that I just wanted my tires, installed and balanced. That brought the total down to $697. You see you have to pay for the fourth tire up front, then when they are done using your money interest free for 6 weeks or so, they rebate you the cost of the fourth tire which also means you have to pay sales tax on that tire which you do not get reimbursed for.
As somebody else mentioned on this forum, these folks at Pep Boys are all on commision so they will *** every chance they get. Beware!!
Also once the tire were mounted and I got the car home, unlike most consumers, I got on my hands and knees in my garage and looked closely at the tires. I found they had installed 205/50/17 on three corners of the car (correct size), and a 225/50/17 on the fourth corner..I called them and they asked how soon I could get the car back there...which was funny because they were open to huge liability if something had happened to the car. I brought it back about 24 hours later and asked what compensation they were going to give me and suggested since they cant resell that tire as new, they might as well put it in my trunk as a spare...the store manager Tony Minwegen just laughed at me, and said he "wished he could do something" and I said yes me too...that was it! End of story and the first and last time I will go to Pep Boys.
