Pep Boys - Tire Set Review from Dover, New Jersey

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Sta away from that place!!! Bought 4 new tires and went back because the car was vibrating above 70m/h. They said they would look at it and had the car for two hours. When I went back, the car was outside and they said they needed to look further into it???? They had the car for three more hours when i went to pick it up they had the car on a lift and said there was a cut boot on the front cv joint and that could be the cause of the vibration. Absolute bull ***!!! They didnt even look at the tires!!! And charged me for the diagnostic. I took the car to Sears and had the tires rebalanced problem solved. Will never spend a penny or a second of my time back in that store. Customer service at the tire counter is horrible and very unprofessional. The guy was very defensive from the beginning saying they needed to do a road test to verify my claim. While I was waiting to get my keys he was talking trash to his about another unhappy customer that had just left.

Pep Boys Car Service Review from Fort Worth, Texas
I went to go and get my car assesed by Pep Boys, they said that they would evaluate the damage and would charge me x amount of money for it. It took them all day to assess it and when I looked at the report, they not only tried charging me an extra 500 dollars, but they also broke one of my spark plugs and never told me AND tried to add the fix to the bill. I don't know what was going on, but I feel as if they were trying to take advantage of my ignorance. I didn't know Pep Boys had such low ethical standards for how they do business. And, now I am having to pay extra to make up for their mistakes.

Amateur Hour Parts and Service People

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
In a word, and with the notable exception of the cashiers, service is -- ATROCIOUS! If the people who "run" my local store are a general reflection of the kind of people your organization calls managers and supervisors, then Manny, Moe and Jock must be the second coming of the "Three Stooges." Couple stories to share ... 1. My heater core, working fine one day, developed an obvious overnight clog. The "experts" in the service department, apparently totally unschooled in the simple technique of backflushing, insisted that the ONLY way to effect a repair was a heating core replacement, requiring removal of the dashboard and steering wheel and accompanied by a charge of $1200. I told these amateurs NO, ran home and found AT LEAST 5 excellent Youtube videos on how to perform the backflush. Took me 30 minutes and I was back in full operation. Net cost to me was a gallon of anti-freeze, purchased somewhere other than Pep-Boys, of course. Pep-boys might want to have their mechanics scan the Youtube web site so that they can complete their training. 2. Ordered a power steering pump replacement. the "crack" (or "on crack") order taker told me that they had to obtain it from another store and would have it by a set time and call me. Three hours after the expected call-back time, I CALLED to inquire. After several extended handoffs, I was told they had the part but forgot to call back. Great. Arrived at the store to find the parts counter manned by an apparently bored team of people with sleepy X-es for eyes behing the counter. Had to wait another 10 minutes for these hustlers to retrieve the part that had just been delivered and they forgot to call me back about. After confirming that it was the proper part number, I left the core and came home, too late by now to complete the reinstallation because of all the Pep Boys delays. Rose bright and early the next day to finish, only to find on opening the box, that the return tube assembly to the new power steering unit was not attached to the unit or included with the unit. If the sleepy attendant could have somehow mustered a 5 second inspection before accepting the core, he could have told me that and spared the extra 10 mile back to the store. That too turned out to be a waste of time, since the ONE thing these incompetents appeared to be good at was getting those core parts right out the door. The resident "Stuporvisor" apparently had not even managed to learn the words, "I'm sorry", or think intelligently. He might have at least attempted to pick up the phone (assuming he knew how to operate one) and see if my core could be retrieved. Heck, I would have thanked him and made the drive over myself. He also couldn't seem to muster any interest in seeing whether the missing part could be ordered or obtained, perhaps because he couldn't operate a computer either. After all this, I could have installed your remanufacutered unit and tried to secure the lost part, but after this experience, I decided instead to return the unit and buy it elsewhere. Turns out about 99 of Pep-Boys competitors sold it cheaper, and I could get and equivalent unit 60% off through Amazon, with no sales tax and free shipping. Hope this chain is proud of these guys, because I certainly won't be dealing with them for many, many, many, many, many, many months to come, if ever. This message was posted to their customer service unit. I'm posting the juicy details on whatever retail feedback forums I can find to let as many others as possible know what they can expect when they drop by a "NO-Pep Boys" store for parts or service. Stay thousands of miles away.

Be warned about the service center here. I checked my car in for an oil change with Shaunna and maybe she was having a bad day or is just always slightly not friendly. Not a big deal at all - I get it. I asked for my tires to be rotated and was told they would be as part of the service (especially since I purchased my tires from them). More on that later. My check engine light was also on and I asked them to check that. I must mention it came on within minutes of having my last oil change at the same Pep Boys. I contacted them about it and was told they would determine the problem for $90. Okay.

I picked up my car and had to ask about the "free" engine light check since they were not going to even mention it. I was told the codes and asked what they meant. The response was "I have no idea". Really - that's it for a service center. Again was told I would have to pay to figure it out. I get the upselling but the lack of care or concern is questionable. So now two or three suspect employees and I wondered if it was me causing the problem. I happened to chat with another customer while waiting and he just raised his eyebrows at the service.

So I left and drove home. My wife was following me since she dropped me off to pick up my car. When we got home, she told me I had two brake lights out. Two! I thought that was part of the "Courtesy Vehicle Inspection" and when I checked online, sure enough it was. Now I'm a little angry, so I called and asked to speak to a manager. I waited on hold for at least five minutes and a guy answered, mumbling his name. I asked who I was speaking to and he mumbled again. I think he said Trey or Troy. I explained the situation and he was somewhat apologetic, but then stated the tech who performed the inspection (Matthew H.) screwed up because his miss cost him money. I asked him to explain that and the manager said he would have made more money if he fixed my lights. He also explained the tire rotation should have been on my receipt, but it was not. So I paid for tires from them and paid to have them rotate my tires and it was evidently not done as well. I could barely contain myself and told him I don't care about the payroll of a tech who does not perform his duties. Instead I care about the safety of my family because what I paid for was not done. His response was I'm sorry if you do not rely on Pep Boys for future services. Are you kidding me! What a joke of a manager.

I hung up knowing I will never go back there and hope this review makes you think twice if you are concerned about your wallet and your safety!

My coolant is leaking really bad so I took it in to see which hose is leaking. I scheduled an appointment for 10/10/15. I brought it in and they told me to bring it back the next day because they didn't have time. I brought it back at 12:00 on 10/11/15. They said it would probably take all day but they'll call me after the pressure test. I waited and waited and by 7:20 they still hadn't called so I went down there and by the time I got there at 7:55 they were closed. Im a care taker and need my car for work to drive someone to their doctor tomorrow but pep boys kept my car with no call.

I purchased four new tires from Pep Boys in late 2014. I returned to the same location for oil changes and tire rotation at least four times. Three out of the four times I've had to either return or remind the mechanic on tire rotation and they document that they do perform the tire rotation but I know they don't since I mark tires before the tire rotation and they end up in exactly the same position when I mark them initially

Took car for a safety brake check. Driver side brakes was making a grinding metal noise. Car was checked by technician. Told me it might be dust b/c brakes were new. Drove for 9 hours to find out the calipers crews were missing. Brake pad was coming off. Caliprr also cut deep into the rim as well. Thank you TIREPLUS for catching the problem and sending me on my way safely... I should know better by now not to take the car to Pepboys....

i had an appoint booked for 2 o'clock PM and after 3 hours half noticed my car hasn't been moved so i took it. i called "manager" to complain. one laughs, and the other one says they can't complete the job that day, to go back another day. offers to check it free, what makes him think that 20 dollars is a difference? and that ill go back after waiting 3 hours and half for nothing. and making call out of work. i recommend people to stay away from pep boys located in dedham MA 02026. make sure to stat away.!

Shoddy Work, Pitiful Management

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Pep Boys - Shoddy Work, Pitiful Management

I took my car into PepBoys of Athens, Alabama last December (2014) to get a timing belt job done on my 1997 Honda Civic. Everything seemed well until this last week.

I was driving home from a trip about an hour and a half away on 5/15/2015 when my check engine light came on. When I got home I looked in my engine bay and the crank position sensor wire was rubbing on my timing belt. I felt of the wire and the timing belt had rubbed through the wire leaving two bare wires shorting out against each other. I got up the next morning 5/16/2015 to take my car back to PepBoys and had a strange noise coming from the engine. I figured it was a problem with the sensor and the guys at PepBoys said that it was covered under warranty.

I went back to pick my car up 5/18/2015 and it was still making the noise but the sensor had been replaced. I took it right back and they worked on it for another day. When I went back to the shop on 5/19/2015 they said that the A/C compressor bearing had gone bad and that it was causing the noise. They quoted me $1200 to fix the A/C issues. I told them that I believed it was due to the sensor issue initially and the Assistant Manager, Richard, shrugged it off. He said that it was purely coincidence that those two issues happened at the same time. I told them to leave the A/C belt off as to not damage the engine further. The manager, Scott, was not there so I took the car home to deal with it later.

I got up this morning 5/20/2015 to drive the car to work. On the way home from work I was going about 70mph and heard something come loose in the engine bay. When this happened my engine began making bad noises. I made it home and looked in the engine bay. What I saw was the A/C idler pulley lodged against my drive belt and drive pulley. The mechanic had left this pulley loose in the engine bay and it was grinding against the belt and pulley in the car. This could have been a lot worse and myself or my wife could have been involved in a breakdown or accident due to this mistake.

I would like this situation to be made right and I plan to speak with Scott when I am off work and he is in the shop. I do not believe that the A/C issue is a coincidence and I am disappointed in the shoddy work that has been done on my car.

If there is anything that the corporate or local office could do, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear your problem but whenever you take a car anywhere to get worked on expect the unexpected. Maybe the guy working on your car had a bad day or his girlfriend just left him or he's on something or he's an alcoholic or any kind of scenario.

If at all possible do the work yourself.

I trust no one when it comes to my vehicles. Again, sorry and good luck.

You're the *** that walked in 2 minutes before they close while they had other vehicles that they were working on at that time, if the bulb was so easy to do why not do it yourself?

Slipped in unwanted and unasked for tire warranty and tire "deal" no deal after mounting costs.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Was billed and charged for an extended tire warranty I never asked for. Also, buy three get fourth tire free...after 60 dollars to balance them and taxes on all that...makes it no deal. Its all a scam and ripoff. Dont go there. Dont trust them or any of the drive in service centers because its all the same. Unasked for services get done and you get slipped the bill in the small print. Go anywhere else but do not go here for tires or any other service. You will just get lied to and taken advantage of. Period.
